What happens to the groove when the cutting board gets wet?
If your mill board gets very wet, for example, because you're cutting a lot of vegetables with a lot of liquid, like tomatoes, the wood will swell slightly. This is its natural characteristic and completely normal. The blade may then sit a little tighter in the groove. However, after drying, this change will reverse, and the blade will return to its normal position. Which wood is best for a cutting board?
For a cutting board, it's important that the material is resilient and durable, but not too hard, as otherwise the knives would dull too quickly. Glass, for example, is unsuitable for this. For this reason, we use hard, robust solid wood for the mill board. Another advantage is that it's easy to maintain and can even be sanded if necessary. There are small differences in our materials, which are described in the next question. However, we recommend choosing your mill board primarily based on your personal taste.
How do the different woods differ?
Basically, the mill boards are very similar in their properties, so you should choose yours primarily according to your personal taste. Walnut is slightly lighter than the other woods and always has a very noble and lively grain. Our beech wood has the advantage of being sourced regionally and having short transport routes. The same applies to our oak wood, which is the hardest wood in our range and impresses with its typical, beautiful oak grain.

The idea arises at the breakfast table
What began as an everyday moment became an inspiration: a freshly baked loaf of bread that is difficult to slice evenly – a classic annoyance. A "third hand" is needed to support the bread while slicing – and that's how the idea for the mill board was born. The aim was clear: it should not only be practical, but also beautiful enough to stay on the table.
From concept to handcraft
After initial sketches and numerous tests in the home workshop, the first prototype was initially handcrafted in the garage itself – made of solid beech wood, with a vertical stop and clearly reduced to the essentials. The focus wasn't on perfection, but on a feeling for proportion, stability, and function. Based on this, in collaboration with a designer friend, the first refined model was created: precisely manufactured, cleanly processed, and durable in use. Every detail was thought through, tested, and revised. No compromise on material, function, or feel – and no unnecessary frills.
The launch of the mill board
The final model of the mill board initially went online as a crowdfunding project – and was fully funded in less than 48 hours. The response was so overwhelming that the first limited-edition series sold out completely shortly thereafter. Customers particularly praised its practicality and high-quality design. A niche product became a statement piece for conscious kitchens.
The Special Edition is created
The "Special Edition" marks the beginning of a new chapter: The mahogany inlay in the cut surface gives the board even more character – as a contrast to the light beech wood and as a clear design feature.
